about

the long short path is a project focused on finding home in the journey. the album builds a sonic shelter for experiences of transition, change, and being in between. it weaves together rabbinic and liturgical texts with original lyrics, blending the musical modes of the ashkenazi nusach tradition of my childhood with american folk, neo-soul, pop, soft rock and more genres than i yet have the ethnomusicological knowledge to name.

the long short path was released in the jewish month of elul because this month is a unique time between beginnings and endings, a temporal place where it is easy to linger and hard to approach; we are often most and least comfortable in the in between.

during this season and in these songs, we find ourselves engaged in the lifelong work of confronting who we are, where we have been and where we are going. we remember that the journey never ends, and that life is a continual cycling of joy and sadness, pleasure and pain, leaving and returning. elul holds all these contradictions and helps us be at home in our own incompleteness. how can the music hold us through these changes? how can it mark ritual that illuminates the heaviness and radiance of transitions? how can it help us be well, help give us strength, perspective and beauty along the way?
